community supported agriculture:csa

we signed up for a CSA & just got our first box full of fresh produce. this week’s bounty included romaine lettuce, radishes, onions, beets, tatsoi, zucchini, brown rice, broccoli, cauliflower, bok choy, oranges & cilantro. i immediately noticed how especially fresh & healthy all of the veggies look. all of the produce came from local organic farms. i love so much that we are supporting local agriculture.

we can’t wait to put our box of goodies to good use. tonight’s menu: homemade veggie pizza with a crispy salad.

is it super nerdy that we’ve been excited all day to pick this up?

cheers, anna

p.s. we ordered our CSA through the market on holly, and it was organized by silver lake farms.

paper lanterns & japanese bakeries

we ♥ little tokyo!

robby & i had an amazing japanese lunch today in this adorably quaint little neighborhood. it’s my favorite place to eat downtown… some cute/yummy spots: joy mart restaurant (we ate lunch there today), cafe dulce (we grabbed really good coffees here after lunch), lazy ox canteen (great for lunch too, although not japanese), blooming art shop (full of colorful paper & origami cranes).

happy thursday, my darlings!

so sorry for ignoring the blog the past few weeks… things always seem to get busier this time of year.

not that i’m complaining. i seriously ♥ autumn. but you already knew that, didn’t you?

here’s a quick little update:

at the end of august we traveled to new york for stasie & shai’s wedding. it was a magical week filled with love. we enjoyed staying at the palace hotel, visiting a few of our favorite places, & spending time with family & friends. oh, how lucky we are to have traveled to new york city so many times … we kind of don’t feel like tourists anymore when we go!

we also spent some time in bakersfield with family. one night, we went on a beautiful bike ride. the sky was stormy. it drizzled a bit. and lightning & thunder kept it exciting.

flat stanley visited pasadena last week, and we showed him around. here are a few highlights. :)

{more on flat stanley here.}

we are celebrating our first anniversary this weekend with a romantic little getaway to a seaside town. (we like to call it honeymoon #2)  i can’t wait for the chilly weather, strolls on the beach, cozy dinners, & time with my sweet husband. it will be a fun & smoochy weekend, for sure!

here are a few sweet moments from honeymoon #1:

have a delicious weekend, my dears!

p.s. have you heard of this?! makes me want to travel to finland. so sweet!

with some of robby’s coworkers, we went to the rooftop bar at the standard. i recommend it. very l.a. (& we also realized the place is way too cool for us with its swanky pool & waterbed-filled bubble-pods. but we’re ok with that.) the drinks were good, & the people-watching was even better.

we made this (coconut shrimp deliciousness).

this has become my favorite lunch. so simple & so summery.

we ate a lot of meals at our cozy little table for two.

added a few new plants, including this little guy…

{he’s tropical foliage of some sort}

& a few tucked into the corner of our patio: a gardenia, some more foliage, spearmint that is currently sprouting & a hydrangea (not shown). cross your fingers they don’t all die by the end of the week!

cupcake convert

{my chocolate marshmallow cupcake}

i spent the afternoon in valencia with my mom, mother-in-love & auntie carolyn… we took a cupcake break at velvet. I did not used to be a big cake person. in fact, i’m still not a big frosting-lover, but I feel like cupcakeries are really stepping it up now with the high-quality ingredients & delicious flavor combos. less corn syrup/overly sweet toppings & more flavorful fillings… yes, please!

i’ve even convinced robby now that cupcakes can be delicious if done right. :)

i especially love making my own homemade (& completely organic!) cupcakes from the primrose bakery cookbook. it might just make you a convert too.

p.s. although i’ve hesitantly embraced the cupcake fad, i still think pies are making quite a comeback in the dessert arena. & i wholeheartedly support it! i mean, who doesn’t love a freshly baked, steamy pie from the oven? my favorite dessert of all time just might be homemade blackberry pie.

{mom & i made this lattice-crusted peach pie last weekend}

pique-nique d’été (summertime picnic)

robby & i met downtown again for a little pique-nique (i liked to pretend we were in france for this while we ate … sans the all-white attire. although, if i had thought of it earlier i would have incorporated that as well!)

we munched on prosciutto & parmesan sandwiches, a summer salad of green beans & grape tomatoes, lemony water, olives & pickles. we finished with chocolate-covered strawberries.

a darling husband & lunch under an umbrella makes me happy as a peach!

je t’aime

i mean, seriously, how cute is he?

getting drinks on the patio at kings row gastropub = one of our favorite new ways to unwind in pasadena. (i love their strawberry margaritas & robby likes their whiskey sours. also, their kale with bacon & portobello fries are a-mazing!)

have a romantic & relaxing weekend, friends! on the agenda for us: a friend is coming to stay for the weekend. we also plan to go on a bike ride, play tennis, make chocolate chip pancakes (robby that’s all you!), & potentially eat here (one of our favorites).

xo, anna

p.s. don’t kill me for posting all of these pictures of you, hubs. i can’t resist. :)

a trip to the library

the pasadena public library, a few short blocks from our apartment, is absolutely breathtaking.

it might be robby’s favorite place. i kind of like it too. ;)

“be made whole by books as by great spaces and the stars” -mary c. davies (california poet)

this inscription can be found as you look up at the front of the pasadena central public library.

p.s. this post is dedicated to robert austin smith – the man who loves to read more than anyone i know –  a lifetime lover of library books.

rose bowl flea market

robby & i went to the rose bowl flea in pasadena today with my mom & my aunt carolyn.

aunt carolyn is the veteran. she came prepared with a rolly basket.

there were cute vintage teacups everywhere (i took one home) …

… along with this adorable vintage tea towel.

& i found this neat antique medicine bottle from the 1890s! it now takes on another life in our home as a little vase …

i also got this cute little monogrammed hankie for robby. ;)

i love treasure hunting.
